Tehran [Iran], January 5: At least 19 protesters have been killed during the unrest has rocked Iran over the past week, the organization Iran Human Rights, which is based in Oslo, reported in its latest update on Sunday.
Hundreds more are said to be have been injured and arrested, the organization said.
Additionally, the authorities are alleged to have used heavy weapons in some areas to suppress protests. The Iranian government continues to provide no information about the unrest and casualties. Current figures rely mainly on reports from social media and activists abroad. These reports cannot be independently verified.
According to witnesses, dramatic scenes unfolded in the centre of the capital, Tehran, on Sunday. Demonstrators ignored the police's demand to leave the area immediately. Subsequently, officers used batons against the crowd, which included many young women.
Journalists are prohibited from directly reporting on the protests, whether they work for Iranian or foreign media. Photographers have been unequivocally warned not to take pictures, or they risk a work ban.
Publications in Iranian media are subject to censorship by the authorities. The protests directed against the country's Islamic rulers have been ongoing since last Sunday.
