Nagoya [Japan], September 29: In an extraordinary exhibition of range, stamina and competitive grit, Bahrain's Winfred Yavi etched her name into athletics immortality at the Asian Games by becoming the first athlete in history to sweep the 5000m, 10,000m and 3000m steeplechase in a single edition of the Asiad.
Adding to a glittering resume that already boasts the 2024 Olympic title and the 2023 World Championship gold in Budapest, Yavi delivered a performance for the ages in distance running in the women's 5000m final on Monday.
Using a blistering final lap to clock 15:10.18, Yavi broke the resolve of a fiercely competitive field to claim her third gold medal of the campaign.
Japan's Nozomi Tanaka pushed the pace in front of a roaring home crowd to take silver in 15:11.65, while India's Parul Chaudhary rounded out the podium with a bronze in 15:14.61.
Reflecting on her historic triple, Yavi said: "To come here and compete across multiple demanding events takes everything you have, but I wanted to push the boundaries of what is possible. Winning three gold medals for Bahrain is an indescribable feeling, and the support out on the track tonight pushed me through that final lap." While Yavi's historic treble stole the headlines, the sixth day of the athletics competition delivered an explosive night of action featuring three new Games Records in the women's 400m hurdles, men's 3000m steeplechase and men's 1500m.
The field events set a fierce tone for the evening as China's Feng Bin reaffirmed her continental dominance in the women's discus throw, securing gold with an impressive effort of 63.83 meters. Compatriot Jiang Zhichao claimed silver with a season-best 62.25 meters, repeating their exact one-two finish from the 2022 Hangzhou Games, while Thailand's Subenrat Insaeng took bronze with 61.43 meters.
Reflecting on her relentless preparation, Feng said: "I was afraid that the weather would be a dampener and, even though the grip at times was difficult, we maintained our focus. It's great to see the last result of the Asian Games being repeated." The throwers continued to provide spectacle in the men's javelin, which brought heavy drama as Sri Lanka's Commonwealth Games champion Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage unleashed a massive 88.55-meter throw to capture gold.
India's Yashvir Singh claimed silver with a personal best of 85.72m, compatriot Rohit Yadav took bronze with 84.35m and Pakistan's Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem finished fourth with 80.29m.
Meanwhile, in the men's long jump, China's Shi Yuhao leaped to gold with a season's best of 8.17 meters. India's Murali Sreeshankar claimed silver with 8.07 meters before his night was cruelly cut short by a twisted ankle on his fourth attempt, leaving Uzbekistan's Anvar Anvarov to take the bronze with 8.06 meters.
On the track, the action escalated rapidly with a flurry of record-breaking performances. In the women's 400m hurdles, UAE's Mariam Kareem captured gold and shattered the Games Record with a brilliant 54.31 seconds, eclipsing Bahrain's Kemi Adekoya's 2022 mark of 54.45 seconds. Kazakhstan's Adelina Zemlyanskaya secured silver in 54.58 seconds and India's Vithya Ramraj claimed bronze in 54.75 seconds, with both athletes running impressive personal bests.
Shortly after, the men's 400m hurdles final saw Qatar's Bassem Hemeida surge down the home straight to win gold in 47.82 seconds.
The endurance events provided some of the most breathless moments of the evening, starting with the men's 3000m steeplechase where Japan's Ryuji Miura executed a brilliant, decisive surge with two laps remaining to shatter the Games Record in 8:17.36, eclipsing Avinash Sable's 2022 mark of 8:19.50.
Compatriot Ryoma Aoki pushed Miura all the way to take silver in 8:17.60, while Qatar's Ibrahim Zakaria earned bronze with 8:18.13.
The night concluded with an unforgettable middle-distance battle in the men's 1500m final. For much of the race, India's Gulveer Singh looked poised to script history, seizing control at the front and pushing a fierce pace. However, Japan's Kazuto Iizawa had saved his best for the closing meters, unleashing a ferocious late surge down the final straight to overtake Singh and clock 3:36.35, breaking a 16-year-old Games record previously held by Saudi Arabia's Shaween Mohammed Othman at 3:36.49.
Speaking after his stunning victory, Iizawa shared: "I knew I had to stay patient while Singh pushed the pace at the front. When it came down to the final meters, I just emptied everything I had left in the tank to chase him down."
Despite being overtaken at the tape, Singh fought valiantly to secure a brilliant silver medal with a personal best of 3:36.72, his second silver medal of the Asian Games, the first coming in the 10,000m. Japan's Nagiya Mori completed an exceptional outing by charging through to secure the bronze.
China claimed gold in both the men's and women's 4x100m relays, with the women winning in 42.96 seconds and the men dominating in 38.17 seconds. In the women's, Thailand took the silver medal in 43.51 seconds with Japan rounding out the podium to claim the bronze in 43.52 seconds.
In the men's, Chinese Taipei took second place in 38.32 seconds, while Korea rounded out the top three finishers with a strong time of 38.43 seconds.
