Washington [US], January 11: The Norwegian Nobel Institute has stated that the Nobel Peace Prize cannot be transferred, shared, or revoked, after Venezuelan activist Maria Corina Machado suggested she might offer the award to US President Donald Trump.
In a statement quoted by Reuters on January 11, the Norwegian Nobel Institute said that the decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize is final and permanent. Citing the Nobel Foundation's statutes, the institute affirmed that decisions related to the prize are not open to appeal.
The Norwegian Nobel Institute also noted that the awarding committees do not comment on the actions or statements of the award recipients after the award ceremony.
"Once a Nobel Peace Prize is announced, the award cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred to another person," according to a statement from the Norwegian Nobel Committee and the Norwegian Nobel Institute. The decision to award the prize is final and valid until later.
Earlier, in an interview on Fox News on January 5th, Ms. Machado, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, expressed her desire to relinquish her award to President Trump.
For his part, the White House occupant said he would be deeply honored to receive the award if Ms. Machado were to present it to him during their planned meeting in Washington DC next week.
Trump himself has always expressed a desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize, arguing that the award is recognition of his diplomatic achievements.
