Washington [US], March 31: The United States has reopened its embassy in Venezuela's capital Caracas, the US State Department said on Monday, almost three months after US special forces captured the country's former authoritarian leader Nicolas Maduro.
The step marks a new chapter in relations between the two countries, the State Department said. Diplomatic relations have been managed from the Colombian capital Bogota for the last seven years.
The acting head of the embassy is on site with a team and preparations are currently under way to ensure that the entire staff can return to the building as soon as possible, the State Department added.
The US closed its embassy in Venezuela in 2019 and withdrew its staff after then president Maduro severed diplomatic relations with Washington.
Since Maduro's removal in January, the country has been led by acting President Delcy RodrÃguez, who was previously Maduro's deputy.
